LA UNION 2011: St. William Cathedral

St. William Cathedral is located at the heart of San Fernando City, La Union, five hours land travel from Manila. The cathedral is modern but its origin dates back to 1764, originally as Pindangan Church in Brgy. San Vicente. It was moved to Tangue, then to Kabaroan, and finally to its present site as St. William Parish Church and was built from stones and bricks. An earthquake damaged the church in 1892 and was destroyed in 1945 during WWII. Post-war in 1947, the church was reconstructed.

On April 11, 1970, says this marker by the cathedral door, the St. William Parish Church became the St. William Cathedral. The first bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando, La Union, was Rev. Victorino C. Ligot.
